We next headed away from the heat and humidity to cool Monteverde and the Fonda Vela Hotel. Despite the breezy conditions while we were there,
we got some excellent birds (not to mention the coatimundis and armadillo), including the extremely rare Lovely Cotinga (Charlie's second sighting in decades
of birding Costa Rica), the Three-wattled Bellbird, and Long-tailed Manakin. |
| Heading back to Hotel Bougainvillea at the end of this excellent trip, we left the main highway heading for the town of Sarchi for some
last-minute souvenirs. But first we had to get through Naranjo, which it turned out was having a massive celebration of the "Tope Naranjo." This apparently involves
a parade of cowboys on horseback, plenty of cerveza, and major traffic congestion. Mighty slow getting through town, but quite interesting to see. The last two
pictures are of an incredible sunset near Monteverde on our last night there. |
