2016 Ecuador Butterfly Tour

Another amazing butterfly trip, this time to Southeast Ecuador and the Podocarpus National Park from 10/10-10/24, 2016. Organized through Sunstreak Tours and led by the incredible Andrew Neild, six of us explored a variety of butterfly habitats from three different base locations south and east of Loja. Our first few days were at the Copalinga Lodge on the outskirts of Zamora and within walking distance of the park; a very comfortable lodge with excellent food and accommodations. We'd return to Copalinga after our next stop at Yankuam Lodge southeast of Zamora. More rustic accommodations at Yankuam but worth it for access to some fabulous butterflying sites. After another visit to Copalinga, our last stop was at Yangana Lodge southwest of Zamora. Yangana exceeded our expectations with very nice rooms, friendly and accommodating hosts, and an incredibly comfortable dining room.

I returned home with almost 3000 pictures taken with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 and post-processed with Adobe Lightroom; about fifteen percent of them are shown in the following pages.

This overview page has pictures of things other than butterflies from the trip, including some spectacular birds and other cool insects, while the remainder of the pages have pictures of some of the butterflies organized by family. My thanks to Andrew Neild and Kim Garwood for their generous assistance in identifying a good number of the butterflies from the trip. As always, there are bound to be mistakes in some of my identifications and corrections would be greatly appreciated.
