Rio de Janeiro Butterfly Tour

On a butterfly trip organized by British butterfly expert Adrian Hoskins, it was off on an exploratory adventure to Southeast Brazil for the last two weeks of January 2014. Our trip took us to four locations. First was a few days along the coast east of Rio in the town of Marica, where we stayed at the home and eco-lodge of our local British guide, Richard Raby, who leads bird and butterfly tours in Brazil. Next was a few days at Estalagem da Bocaina, then the lower elevations of Itatiaia National Park, where we stayed at Hotel Donati before moving to the higher elevations based out of Pousada Ribeirao de Ouro. In addition to our two leaders, my friend Rebecca and I, also along on the trip was another British guy, David, and an American, Frank. A native Brazilian friend of Richard's, Eric, also joined us for most of the trip to help with translation and directions.

As usual, I ended up getting home with way too many (~2000) pictures, but managed to narrow it down to those shown here. I used my Nikon D7100 mostly with a 70-300 mm lens, but a few were taken with a 105 mm macro lens. We are still working out the identification of some of the butterflies, and this site will be updated as that task progresses. Of course, I would appreciate any mistakes being brought to my attention. Special thanks are due to Adrian Hoskins and Kim Garwood for their tremendous help in identifying the majority of the butterflies, and to Bernard Hermier for his wonderful input on all the skippers. (In September, 2016, Jorge Bizarro, Research Coordinator for the Brazilian Ecological Reserve of Guapiacu, REGUA, also informed me that a metalmark photographed at Serra da Bocaina, was the recently described Anteros ethani, rather than the Anteros kupris originally identified.) This page has pictures of people and places, flowers, birds, bugs, and critters, while the remaining pages have butterflies organized by family.
